On Friday, September 18th, people all across the nation will take to the streets to turn car spaces into people spaces. In Seattle, Feet First is leading the charge by making it relatively cheap and easy to get street use and meter permits.  On Capitol Hill, People's Parking Lot (a.k.a. the Keith Harris Conspiracy) and the Capitol Hill Community Council have stepped up to make Park(ing) Day 2009 even better.

People's Parking Lot and the Capitol Hill Community Council are hosting the first ever Park(ing) Day Seattle Prize.  A group of local journalists (is Pioneer Square News interested?), unemployed artists, and other disreputable neighborhood-types will be recruited to the judging caravan, which will wind its way throughout Seattle in search of the finest park to grace a parking spot. The winner will receive a super-secret fabulous trophy and an equally fabulous prize.  The awards ceremony will take place at 6pm at Park(ing) Day Central Park on 500 E Pine.

Qwest Field north lot plan headed to City Council

By AUBREY COHEN SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF

A plan to allow taller buildings on a lot north of Qwest Field is set to go to the City Council Monday.

A partnership of Nitze-Stagen and Opus Northwest, and the Seattle Housing Authority has a deal to buy the 3.85 acres from King County and applied last year to increase maximum heights from 120 feet for a residential project or 85 feet for a commercial building to 240 feet. The proposed project would put 645 housing units above 12,055 square feet of retail and 450 above-ground parking stalls in towers of 10, 20 and 25 stories. A fourth, 20-story tower would have 480,000 square feet of offices above 6,966 square feet of retail and 500 above-ground parking spaces.

The plan would allow buildings up to 240 feet with conditions on such issues as building bulk, street-level uses, setbacks of upper floors, affordable housing and environmentally friendly construction.

Officials have been talking about how to get development on the...

July 8, 2009 The Seattle Police Officers’ Guild is proud to announce their first round of endorsements for the following races:

Seattle City Attorney: Tom Carr

Tom Carr’s proven leadership and experience is critical to keeping Seattle safe. His initiatives with the North Precinct Auto Theft Project resulted in a 60% drop in citywide auto theft. Tom has also been a leader in protecting domestic violence victims and prosecuting drunk drivers. Seattle Police Guild President, Sgt. Rich O’Neill said, “The police officers need an experienced prosecutor like Tom Carr working with them to keep Seattle safe. Tom’s opponent has no experience prosecuting criminals. This position is too important to be accomplished with on the job training.”

Seattle City Council Position #4: Sally Bagshaw

Sally Bagshaw has dedicated her life to public service. Sally’s work in the King County Prosecutor’s Office demonstrated her ability to not only be a leader, but also to work as a member of a team. This experience will be very valuable on the...

City Hall’s plaza on 4th Avenue between Cherry and James will host a farmers’ market each Tuesday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., beginning June 23 through September 29, 2009. Summer brings a wonderful bounty, and City Hall Plaza will make a lively farmers’ market. Today I noticed two drug related instances in PS.  First was the usual two guys smoking out of a glass pipe in Occidental park which is nothing new.  Called 911 but got the usual reply.  The other was a younger thug walking around trying to make quick sales.  I was busy and could not call 911.   We will lose this neighborhood to the drug addicts unless we do something about it.  I thought possibly Twitter would be a good idea between merchants and local residences that care.  Quickly twitting a description of the crime, location and physical description we could be aware of the individuals and track their locations to inform the police.   The police need to take us more seriously and if there are enough of us calling they will take action.  Any thoughts?

As many of you know, there have been a rash of car break-ins at the CPS garage on 1st and Columbia.  I just came home at 1 a.m. and found the stairwell exit propped open.  I am asking if the neighborhood could help us keep an eye on the garage, make sure that all doors are closed, and call 911 if you see or hear any suspicious activity.   The police are supposed to start patrolling the garage at night, but any community support would be greatly appreciated!
