1.  Welcome and Introductions
2.  Review of May Minutes
No comments submitted
3.  Updates and Reports
Fortson Square and Occidental Square
  • The Pioneer Square Spring Clean was very successful with 104 volunteers. There will be a round of mulching to complete the job later this month. Volunteers will be needed.  Email info@pioneersqure.org if interested.
  • Work on the fence mural at Occidental and Washington, will be starting Tuesday June 23rd. Both of these projects help fight crime by reinforcing positive influence on the neighborhood, by “eliminating signs of decay” and “taking positive possession of the space”.
  • Discussion about who best to oversee Fortson Square and other issues will be taking  place between SDOT, Parks, neighboring property owners and others.  Lisa will report more next meeting.  If anyone has any comments, suggestions, or solutions for the Fortson Square area, please email info@pioneersquare.org.

As many of you know, there have been a rash of car break-ins at the CPS garage on 1st and Columbia.  I just came home at 1 a.m. and found the stairwell exit propped open.  I am asking if the neighborhood could help us keep an eye on the garage, make sure that all doors are closed, and call 911 if you see or hear any suspicious activity.   The police are supposed to start patrolling the garage at night, but any community support would be greatly appreciated!

Fugitive arrested in Pioneer Square

On March 31st, Seattle Police received a request from Richmond Police in California to be on the lookout for a murder suspect believed to be in Seattle.  The murder occurred in Richmond last week.

Seattle Police homicide detectives developed information that the suspect, a 55-year-old man, was at a shelter in the 1500 block of Alaskan Way S.  The information proved to be correct.  The suspect was contacted and placed under arrest without incident.  The suspect was subsequently booked into King County Jail for Investigation of Fugitive.  The suspect’s car was impounded for processing.

I came across this over on The Slog and found it somewhat amusing.

If A Woman Comes Up to You In Pioneer Square and Starts Grabbing Your Junk, She's Probably Trying to Steal Your Wallet

If you're walking through Pioneer Square and a middle-aged woman tries to fondle you, she's probably trying to steal your wallet.

According to a police report filed on February 18th, two men reported that while they were walking through Pioneer Square at about 10pm, they were accosted by a 50 to 65-year-old woman with a cane, who approached one of the men and grabbed his testicles. "While he was distracted," the report says, "the woman took his wallet."

Police are investigating the case as a "strong-armed robbery."

All last week, Tyrone Love had been telling friends about the Sunday night party he was organizing at Crimson C, a club in Pioneer Square.

Early Monday morning, soon after the doors at the elegant nightspot had closed, Love lay dead on a street in the Central District, shot multiple times.

Police have not confirmed the victim's identity, but numerous friends did.

Hi folks,

I'm a new poster, and actually just found out about this site this morning when we stopped into the Foster White gallery to inform them of an early morning burglary of our flat.  The thief's likely path was across the Foster White deck, up the wall at the Greg Kucera gallery deck, then up the standpipe on the side of our building to gain access to the no longer used (and supposedly unsafe?  That's what we were told when we moved in - not to stand on them) fire escape.  The double-hung windows looked latched, but because the top pane had dropped down, were unfortunately not.  A cash-free wallet and an older Dell laptop were stolen.  The officers responding were reassuring that this was a rare (and incredibly bold) event.  Check your windows and doors though, it's smart and you don't want to lose more than we did.

there appears to be a strong possibility that the new jail could be sited at 5th and jefferson, just south of the existing king county jail. part of the reason this site may be viable is that there has been no pushback from our neighborhood. if you would rather not see another jail in pioneer square's backyard, it might be a good idea to let the mayor and city council know what you think.

Attending the East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition meeting this evening, I learned a little about current policing trends. It seems modern policing is changing from crime reaction to crime prevention. The success of the community efforts in Providence, Rhode Island is touted as the model to emulate: this city has taken back their streets!

Councilmember Tim Burgess is looking for our feedback on his Safer Streets Initiative, found here: http://seattle.gov/council/burgess/news/2008safer_streets.pdf which is inspired by Providence, RI. You can contact him at tim.burgess@seattle.gov, he takes appointments Friday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In the latest flare-up of violence on the streets of Seattle, three men were shot by a gunman from an alleyway in Pioneer Square at 2:30 a.m. today. Two of the men are in critical condition at Harborview, and the third has been released with minor injuries. While the details are nowhere near clear about the gunman's motivation, the SPD seems fairly certain the flare-up was not random and citizens should not--repeat, should not--be concerned about getting shot from an alleyway unless they're involved in something sketchy. (Is there ever a perfectly legitimate, compelling reason to be hanging out on a corner in Pioneer Square at 2:30 in the morning, we wonder? In the rain, no less?)

This appeared on the Seattle PI's site about a potential drive-by shooting early Thursday morning near James and 2nd. Here is the link:

11 shot, 1 stabbed, 3 dead and 0 arrests this weekend in King County (my business partner witnessed a shooting over in the Pike & Pine area just a few days ago).

It seems every neighborhood in Seattle is screaming about the rise in violence, not just us in Pioneer Square. It looks like we all had a rough weekend in Seattle, what in the world is going on?

We are currently working on adding the Seattle Police Department RSS feed for the West Precinct into the website, so sometime in the next few days the SPD blotter will be automated to feed their updates into this site. The only downside is the updates will be for all of the West Precinct and not just the Square.

For those of you who wish to stay on top of what is happening in the West Precinct (Pioneer Square), there is a SPD blotter that gives almost real time updates to the important happenings. The web address is http://spdblotter.seattle.gov

Until we find someone to post crime related posts, I will try to link any posts related to Pioneer Square as they appear.
