Seattle Times food writer Nancy Leson blogged about the opening of the new Elliott Bay Cafe. The new person at the helm is none other than Brasa chef and owner Tamara Murphy. The food is amazing, and the place looks great (after a month of renovations and clean-up). Stop by for breakfast or lunch, and take a look at Leson's post:

Change is not always for the best
The old staff is gone and seems to have been handled poorly. The vegan field roast sandwiches are not on the menu...not sure why anything was changed from a nice intimate friendly vibe to a more corporate generic vibe.

Change isn't always for the better...
But this time it SO is! Just had lunch for the first time since the changeover at the new Elliot Bay Cafe. Great food! Creative, flavorful, well prepared and presented, and not too expensive. Definitely one of the best choices for lunch in the area. It is really comfortable, clean, well lit, not corporate at all. It will definitely be on our list of regular spots. This is a great addition to the neighborhood.

Meh.
We were SO excited when we heard about the changes at the Elliot Bay Cafe but we were disappointed when we finally got around to checking it out last week.

It wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular, either. We were expecting more from a Tamara Murphy menu. I had the Moroccan steak sandwich with salad, he had the roast beef sandwich with chips. Overall, the food was kinda *blah*, sloppily put together, and messy to eat.

The flavor profile on the steak sandwich was good, but it wasn't assembled with care-- it was literally DRIPPING with oil and the content were spilling out of the pita. The yogurt sauce and feta cheese wasn't spread evenly over the pita which meant that some bites tasted like nothing BUT feta and other bites had no feta at all and tasted of nothing but steak and onions.

The roast beef sandwich was nothing special-- we could have gotten an identical sandwich and bag of Tim's (for a few bucks cheaper!) at any of the lunch joints around the Square. Plus, it wasn't made out of *real* roast beef-- just plain old Arby's-style cold cuts like you'd get anywhere else.

The price wasn't bad and I didn't feel like we overpaid for the food that we got (about $18.00 for the two of us, no drinks), but we were underwhelmed by the food and that was a HUGE let down.

Another let down was the service-- the staff was aloof and cold. No one greeted us as we walked in, offered us a menu to look at (their location wasn't obvious-- tucked on a stand away from the bookstore-to-cafe entrance), told us about the off-the-menu specials (which we didn't see until after we ordered, since they were tucked under the counter on a chalkboard), or made any suggestions.

The cashier couldn't figure out how to work the register and no one behind the counter even made eye contact with us, let alone smiled or made us feel welcome. We felt like our presence was an annoyance to them more than anything, which is completely unacceptable.

We get better and more personalized service from the owner of Pizza Professionals when we're only spending $3.00 on a slice during a crazy lunch rush-- there's no reason that the employees of a slow and overstaffed cafe (there was at LEAST five people working in the cafe-- two in the back and three up front-- and barely any customers in the cafe) couldn't even acknowledge our presence-- especially when we're paying about $20.00 for a quickie lunch.

We'll give the Elliot Bay Cafe another try-- and we're willing to write off our crappy experience as growing pains-- but we REALLY hope that they shape up because it would be a shame to waste such potential!
